The main focus of this home design by Eek and Dekkers was to create a simple and honest space that prioritized the quality of living for the client’s family. To achieve this, the architects chose to use industrial construction methods and placed the house’s volume 80cm above ground level, with a basement below. The basement, which contains living spaces, has windows that project into the garden, giving the feeling of being in a garden room. All floors of the house are connected by an open steel staircase and there are doors that can be closed for privacy.
To maximize light and privacy, the house was placed far back on the lot and the windows are designed differently on each floor. On the basement level, the windows protrude slightly from the facade to allow in as much light as possible. On the ground floor, large windows with no visible frames are placed as cut-outs in the facade material, allowing in plenty of light for living areas. On the sleeping floor, the windows are smaller and located deeper in the facade to ensure privacy.
This home is being built to BENG (Nearly Energy Neutral Building) standards, meaning it will be gasless and heated by a district-level heat and cold storage system. The house is also designed to be energy efficient, with high insulation values and solar panels providing all the energy needed for the home. Overall, the design of this home aims to create a simple volume where the use of space, light, air, materials, and color come together to create a comfortable and enjoyable living environment for the client’s family.
