Arizona based practice DUST have built an entirely off-grid, self-sustainable home called Casa Caldera. The concrete shelter is located on the southwestern bajada of the Canelo Hills in Southern Arizona’s San Rafael Valley. The building materials are wisely chosen to make the structure blend in with the surrounding environment. The walls are constructed of poured lavacrate.

An existing well provides water and a small solar system powers the house. Cooking, water heating and refrigeration are powered by propane gas. A wood burning stove and fireplace provide the heating and cooling is achieved through 18″ thick scoria walls and natural flow of air. The Casa Caldera is almost entirely custom built by DUST.
